Letter to the Editor – Food Banks

Dear Editor,

This is to follow-up on Steve Gabell’s letter last week in the NG Times re our MP voting against a national food program. We all received a lovely Christmas card from MP Barrett on the back of which was a list of all of the food banks within his constituency (18, if I remember correctly), and asking us all to contribute to them over the Christmas period. Whilst a wonderful sentiment and worthy cause, does it not concern anybody that this should even be requested by our MP? In a society such as ours, should we not be working extra hard to eliminate food banks by whatever means possible? Food banks have now become such a norm and our political leaders (of all stripes!) seem to think that they are now an acceptable part of our society. I find that really worrying and hope that many of you do too.
