Statement from Mayor Nancy Peckford on Ukraine

The Municipality of North Grenville stands with the people of Ukraine as they endure the unprovoked and unsanctioned invasion by Russia of this sovereign nation. As members of the global community, we are very concerned about the highly disruptive economic and social impacts of this war on Europe and the world order generally.

Council is deeply saddened by the tragic images of Ukrainian children and families huddled in subways and bomb shelters, and nurses and doctors treating the injured and those who are too sick to leave amid much chaos.

We recognize the distress and desperation of the hundreds of thousands of families who have sought refuge in neighbouring Poland and Romania, while leaving their husbands, fathers, brothers and uncles behind to fight. We urge Canada to move quickly to facilitate the relocation of as many Ukrainian refugees as is feasible who are willing to come here.

For decades, we know that Ukrainians have called Canada home, making significant contributions to the cultural, political, social and economic life of our society. We encourage you to extend your empathy and compassion to those with Ukrainian ties during this difficult time.

If you are able to do so, please consider a donation to one of many charities supporting this humanitarian crisis.

The federal government will match all donations (dollar-for-dollar, to a maximum of $10 million) to the Red Cross to help bring humanitarian relief to Ukraine. The Ontario government will be donating $300,000 to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation to support humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

It is our profound hope that this conflict ends quickly and that no more lives are lost.

May we pray for peace and for the people of Ukraine.
