Leeds and Grenville counties councillors elected Pat Sayeau, Mayor of the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal, as Warden for 2019-2020. Warden Sayeau was first elected as Mayor of the Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal in 2014, and is currently starting his second term on Counties Council.

For the term ahead, Mr. Sayeau made reference to the challenges, stating “the provincial government’s money woes will make the four-year term of the new council very challenging.” He predicted that the province will be “tight-fisted when dolling out grants” and the Counties Council will need to be careful and prioritize their needs. “The counties must set its priorities and make only carefully costed-out requests of the province.”

To those assembled at the inaugural meeting Wednesday morning, Warden Sayeau stated he looks forward to working with staff and Council. As a keen watcher of the Counties finances, he said “it is important that we are focused on keeping our own house in good order. Local governance at its very best begins at home.”

Outgoing Warden, Robin Jones, said it is important for the new Council to work together. Mayor Jones thanked Counties Council and staff for their support and work during her term of office. She extended her congratulations to Warden Sayeau and offered to assist him in any way.

Justice of Peace John Doran administered the Oath of Office to Council and Warden Sayeau. Dr. David Ward, Parish of Lakes and Locks, Anglican Diocese of Ontario, delivered the invocation. Several special guests were on hand for the inaugural meeting. Michael Jiggins, Executive Assistant to the Honourable Steve Clark, Gananoque Mayor Ted Lojko, and Prescott Mayor Brett Todd were present to express their congratulations.
