Letter to the Editor – Thank You

Dear Editor,

I am writing an acknowledgement of appreciation for your fine weekly newspaper. This acknowledgement has been a long time coming.

Almost 3 years ago, my wife and I closed on a house in the very southern part of North Grenville. Interestingly, it was a home we bought sight unseen. Why? COVID. We had visited the Kemptville area a number of times over the past several years because a good friend of ours lives there. She was good enough to partner with a realtor to look at a number of homes in the area which might meet our needs. One was found, and I put in my two weeks of quarantine in the basement apt of a friend of my friend – doing chores to earn my keep. I left quarantine on the morning of the closing on the home, and found the North Grenville Times in the mailbox.

My wife and I have a home in New York State, but I am a dual US/Canadian citizen. I was born in Toronto, educated at U of Guelph and worked in Montreal and London ON for a large company before being transferred to its HQ in NYC. I have long wanted ‘stakes’ in Ontario and finally persuaded my wife that 2020 was the time. My wife is now pursuing permanent residency in Canada. During the dozens of visits I have made to our North Grenville home over the past few years, I have always enjoyed reading the North Grenville Times from cover to cover. During deepest, darkest COVID, it was a way for me to learn about the community when I couldn’t leave our property. Sure, I waved to people and cars on the road, and to the fine folks from Instacart and Brigadoon (on special occasions) that delivered food during the two weeks of isolation – and many of my/our visits were less than 2 weeks. Such a strange time to move to a new community.

Special thanks are due to David Shanahan whose articles on the history of the area have fascinated me. That’s a man I’d like to raise a beverage with and pick his brain.

Keep up the good work.

Rob Wheelhouse
