Education and literacy is a determinant of health and a valuable investment for all communities. Why is education and public health connected?
Health Units partner with local school boards to help create healthy and supportive environments. The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has a school team that consists of: A School Health Coordinator, Public Health Nurses (PHN), a Public Health Nutritionist (Registered Dietitian), Health Promoters, Registered Dental Hygienists and Certified Dental Assistants and others who can support educators and parents to identify strengths and health concerns in order to build healthier school environments.
What are some of the supports and services the School Health Team can provide?
- Immunizations, oral health and vision screenings, sexual health information and support
- Assistance navigating Health Unit resources and services
- Curriculum consultations and resources for teachers
- Education sessions for educators, parents and school community
- Parenting resources, groups, online and individual support sessions through our Triple P Program
- Support of new and existing healthy school committees, policies and practices
- Connecting the school community to programs and services offered by other community partners
