When asked why she joined the challenge, Maggie responded: “Perhaps it is because I am very aware how fortunate I am, and what a good life I have. I can eat out when I want, I don’t have to worry about a roof over my head, but I am also aware of how fleeting this all is. That in a moment it could all disappear.

I have had to struggle as a single mom, working with minimum wage, but had family around me to help. I think of the refugees out there, in many countries, and can’t imagine what it must be like to not know where you will land up or where your next meal will come from. As I watch the news and see how bad things are getting for so many, I realise that, but for the grace of God, I could be one of those refugees.

Not sure if I can make five days on a strict dietary budget, but I have to try. I have no idea of how much more it will make me aware or the effect it will have if any. But I would like to encourage others to open their eyes as to how good life is for many of us here in North Grenville, and how wasteful we have become as a society. And bring about an awareness of those less fortunate.”
